Everyone has problems in their business. If you were to sit down and think about it, I know you could create a long list of business problems. Like every good 12-step program recommends, the first step is admitting you have problems.
It would make sense that fixing problems in our businesses should be a priority. However, few people have a specific process dedicated to this task. We are often very good at putting out urgent fires that demand our attention but we procrastinate or never get around to solving long-term issues that hinder business growth and development. Let’s change that.
Step 1: Make a List of Your Problems
The first step in solving problems is to make a list of them. This means literally writing them down. Create a document to start a list of challenges or things that aren’t working well in your business. This could be a listing that is not selling, the need to change CRM software or anything else. Whenever something new pops up, add it to the list.
Step 2: Dedicate Time to Problem-Solving
The next step is to create and set aside dedicated time to think about and plan how to solve these problems. I recommend committing at least one full hour once a week to review your problem list, identify the priorities, and determine the next action steps required to resolve an issue. Given that you only have one hour, you may only be able to work on a couple of problems, or if the challenge is big enough, maybe just one. Either way, you’re making progress.
Step 3: Schedule Quarterly Problem-Solving Sessions
Every quarter, set aside a three-hour time slot to work on your problem list and check more items off. This extended session allows you to address more complex issues and reflect on your progress.
Keep Evolving: Embrace Continuous Improvement
You will never get to the bottom of your list, as your business needs will change, the market will shift, and your standards will increase. However, by maintaining the habit of documenting your issues and dedicating time each week to solve them, you will have a business that constantly improves.
Take Action: Don’t Let Long-Term Issues Linger
Don’t let long-term issues linger. Implement a problem-solving process in your business today and watch as your business continues to grow and thrive.
